"England's Glory - The Moreland Story"

England's Glory - The Moreland Story A part of Gloucester history for a century and a half, Moreland's was founded by a Stroud man, Samuel John Moreland. Its distinctive match boxes became famous worldwide and the words "England's Glory" a byword for quality matches.

Moreland was born in Stroud in 1828 and his family moved to Gloucester in about 1834, where his father worked in the timber trade. About 1850, Moreland began work as a lath renderer. Business expanded rapidly and from 1867 the company had its own match factory. By 1911 it was making 360,000 boxes of matches a week. It was all to end with the factory's closure in 1976.

England's Glory - The Moreland Story is a carefully researched and delightful history of Gloucestershire's Moreland dynasty of match manufactures. It is a fascinating insight, not only into the development of a globally renowned manufacturer, but also into the social environment of the time, and includes some charming first-hand reminiscences from a few of its many ex-employees.

England's Glory - The Moreland Story was written by Peter Campion, a leading phillumenist and recognised authority on local match manufacturing history.
